Why Hire an Editor? |
What Will I Do for You? |
|
When you put so much work into your writing, when you've slaved over a manuscript and put your blood, sweat, and tears into a project, why send it out into the world before it's ready? Before it's shiny and clean and professional? From the reader's perspective, we want to trust that you know what you're doing, that we won't be distracted by mistakes in the copy, that your project is important enough to you that it's worth our reading. With only three exceptions, I have never read a book without finding a mistake. Usually several. Blips and blemishes are to be expected, but a messy manuscript can frustrate, discourage, even lose your readers.
We are naturally bad at editing our own writing. We already know what we wrote--or meant to write--so our eyes skip over the little things that need to be cleaned up. I am terrible at editing my own material. You've probably already found a mistake or two in this paragraph. Trick statement! You won't find mistakes, because I had an editor read through it for me and point them out. That second set of eyes--especially unbiased, professional eyes--can take your writing from good to great. |
I weed out spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors, awkward wording, redundancies, and other copy editing issues.
I do very little content editing, which includes advice on plot, character development, storyline, etc. I can edit your manuscript before and/or after you run it through a writing group or get feedback from beta readers. How does it work?Under the Review tab in Word, I can make edits that will show up in red and that you can later go through and accept or reject. I can also leave notes and suggestions in the margin. This allows you control and oversight in the process.
It is important to me that your manuscript reflects your writing and your voice, not mine. Many editing decisions are personal, so unless they are self-explanatory or pure corrections, I will either explain my edits or make suggestions for you to consider, based on your own style and intention. My goal is for your manuscript to become clean and free of errors, the best version it can be, and ready for the publisher or reader to enjoy.
